The Final Major Of The Year: The Open Championship

Publish Date: July 19, 2023

Later this week, the PGA Tour will enjoy the final major tournament of the year: The Open Championship. This prestigious event will take place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England. Royal Liverpool features a 7,312-yard par-72 track and will see the presentation of a record-breaking $16,500,000 purse.

Last season, Cameron Smith claimed his third win of the year at The Open Championship. Smith recorded a 20-under 268 after posting two tournament-low rounds of 8-under 64. This effort enabled him to edge out Cameron Young (-19) and Rory McIlroy (-18). As a reward for his victory, Cameron Smith earned a $2,500,000 share of the purse and 600 FedExCup points.

While this week will feature another two-tournament presentation by the PGA Tour & DP World Tour, there is no doubt that all eyes will be on The Open Championship. The final major tournament of the year will see Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, John Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler, among others, battling for the Claret Jug. Cameron Smith will return in an attempt to defend his title.

The PGA Tour shared a preview of the tournament on Twitter.

Players to watch

Rory McIlroy After his victory last week in Scotland, McIlroy has moved into the top three in the FedExCup standings. Rory hoisted the Claret Jug nine years ago and is desperately seeking the chance to add another major championship victory to his resume.

Scottie Scheffler – Looking to set the record straight after a lackluster performance at last year’s British Open, Scottie Scheffler returns in full force. The number-one ranked player in the world is riding the momentum from seven consecutive top-five finishes. A win this week would add a second major championship to his ever-growing list of accomplishments.

John Rahm – The current FedExCup leader has won four tournaments during this season alone. His most notable victory came in April at the 2023 Masters. After taking a few weeks off to get his head in the right place, John Rahm is looking to become a British Open champion for the first time in his career.

Action at the 151st Open Championship is set to begin at 6:35 am ET. You can stream the action live on USA Network, Golf Channel, NBC and Peacock. The Barracuda Championship will also be available for viewing on Golf Channel.
